West Anhui’s Lu’an sits where the Dabie Mountains begin to soften into hills and plains. It is a large city with a practical feel; the kind of place shaped less by display than by land, water, farming and the roads that bind them together.

According to Chinese-language government and local heritage material, Lu’an is often called Gucheng, or the city of Gao Yao’s descendants. The city’s geography matters as much as its history. Lu’an sits on the northern side of the Dabie Mountains, with major rivers such as the Pi, Shi, Feng and Dongfei running through or near the area. Above them sit the reservoirs and water systems that have long supported agriculture, flood control and daily life.

The numbers tell their own story. In 2024, Lu’an’s GDP reached ¥230.75 billion, up 5.4 percent year on year. Primary industry contributed ¥28.66 billion; secondary industry ¥83.64 billion; and tertiary industry ¥118.45 billion. The city’s structure is now more balanced than before, with services becoming increasingly important.

The city is served by Lu’an Railway Station on the Ningxi Railway, the Hefei-Wuhan high-speed line and the Fuliu Railway, with the Lu’an-Anqing railway under construction. Hefei Xinqiao International Airport is about 70 km away, roughly 50 minutes by car, which gives Lu’an a workable link to the provincial capital and beyond.
