Yingtan calls itself China’s capital of copper and hosts the largest copper smelter on Earth, yet it does not boast a single copper mine of its own; ore is trucked or shipped in from both China and abroad, refined into cathode copper and shipped onward to factories unaware of its origin.
鹰潭自称为中国的”铜都”,境内坐落着全球规模最大的铜冶炼厂,然而这座城市本身却没有一座铜矿,所有矿石都需从中国其他地区乃至海外运入,在此提炼成阴极铜,再运往各地工厂,而这些工厂从未真正见过这些金属最初的来处。
The Guixi Smelter, run by Jiangxi Copper, is the only copper smelter in the world with an annual production capacity of more than one million tonnes at a single plant, and alone accounts for roughly 10 percent of China’s total electrolytic copper output; robotic arms now handle much of the process, with an automated anode and cathode plate transport and inspection system that its operators say was the first of its kind anywhere.

According to People’s Daily Online, Yingtan grew into a leading city for copper smelting and processing precisely because of this gap between where the metal is dug up and where it is turned into something usable, a role built entirely on infrastructure and processing rather than on anything found beneath its own ground.

A Religion Founded Here Left Almost as Fast as the Copper Does
一个诞生于此的宗教,离开的速度几乎不亚于这些铜金属
Zhang Daoling is said to have received a revelation on Mount Longhu, in what is now Yingtan’s Guixi county, in 142 AD, founding the Way of the Celestial Masters and establishing what became known as Taoism’s first organised religious order.
相传公元一四二年,张道陵在今日鹰潭市贵溪境内的龙虎山得道,创立了”天师道”,奠定了后世所称”道教”的第一个有组织的宗教流派。
The teaching did not stay put; it spread from this one mountain through the rest of China and eventually into Japan, Korea and Vietnam, while 63 generations of Zhang Daoling’s own descendants remained behind on Longhu Mountain itself, holding the title of Celestial Master and receiving recognition from every dynasty between the Han and the Qing.
这一教义并未固守一隅;它从这座山出发,传遍中国各地,最终远播日本、朝鲜半岛与越南,而张道陵的六十三代传人,却始终留守于龙虎山本身,世代承袭”天师”称号,历经汉代至清代,历朝历代皆予以承认。
According to the city’s own 2024 economic communiqué, Yingtan’s GDP reached ¥138.4 billion that year, up 7.3 percent, one of the faster growth rates recorded anywhere in Jiangxi; per capita output came to ¥120,553, among the highest in the province, while the permanent population stood at just 1.1458 million, down 5,100 on the year before.
据该市自身发布的二零二四年经济统计公报显示,当年鹰潭市GDP达一千三百八十四点三四亿元,同比增长百分之七点三,增速在江西全省名列前茅;人均产值为十二万零五百五十三元,在全省位居前列,而常住人口仅为一百一十四点五八万人,较上年减少零点五一万人。
Getting to Yingtan means a high-speed rail journey of around an hour from Nanchang, on a line that also connects the city to Fuzhou and beyond, or a shorter drive from Ganzhou, the prefecture Yingtan itself was carved out of when it was elevated to city status in 1983.
前往鹰潭,可乘坐高铁,从南昌出发车程约一小时,该线路还可延伸至抚州及更远地区;也可从赣州驱车前往——鹰潭本身,正是一九八三年升格为地级市时,从赣州辖境中划分出来的。
Copper arrives in Yingtan from mines it does not own, is transformed, and leaves again for factories across China; the religious tradition born on Longhu Mountain did much the same thing centuries earlier, travelling far beyond the one mountain that still bears its name.
铜矿从并不属于自己的矿山运抵鹰潭,经过冶炼加工,再运往中国各地的工厂;而数个世纪之前,诞生于龙虎山的这一宗教传统,也曾走过同样的路径,传播至远方,却始终不曾离开那座至今仍以其命名的山。
