Tucked into western Zhejiang and touching Fujian, Jiangxi and Anhui, Quzhou is a city that has always lived by geography. Its old streets, river valleys and border position still shape how it trades, travels and thinks about itself.

According to Chinese reference material and local reporting, Quzhou’s appeal lies in the way it combines old identity with a very practical present. It is a nationally recognised historic city, a key ecological barrier in western Zhejiang and a place where industry, culture and rail links all matter at once.

South Confucian Roots Still Shape the City

Quzhou’s best-known cultural label is “South Confucian Holy Land, Quzhou with Courtesy”. That slogan is not decoration. It points to the city’s role as the settled home of the southern branch of the Kong family, whose ancestral temple in Quzhou is one of only two such temples in China. The city has built much of its public image around that Confucian inheritance.

Quzhou’s geography has always been useful as well as beautiful. Transport has lately changed the tempo again. Quzhou Station remains a busy rail node, while Quzhou West opened with the Hangzhou-Quzhou high-speed railway on 26 December 2025. Chinese railway reporting says the new line cuts Quzhou-Hangzhou travel to about 41 minutes and has brought direct services on to places such as Beijing, Nanjing, Nanchang, Wuhan and Nanning.
