Tieling sits on flat ground in northern Liaoning, and the flatness is part of the city’s shape. Streets run long, the views open out, and the railway line goes straight through the place instead of skirting around it.
铁岭在辽宁北部，地势平平，而这恰好就是它的样子。街道拉得很长，视线也开阔，铁路线直接穿城而过，不是绕着走。
Murong Street still holds the old centre together. North Tower stands at one end, South Tower at the other, and between them are shops, bus stops, and the ordinary traffic of a working city.
慕容街还是老城中心的骨架。北塔在一头，南塔在另一头，中间是店铺、公交站和一座正在运转的城市日常。
On the east side of town, Lotus Wetland spreads out over a lot of ground. The lotus lake, bird island, reed marsh, and children’s park are all part of the same scenic area, and in July the place fills up early.
城东的莲花湿地铺得很开。莲花湖、湖心鸟岛、芦苇湿地和儿童公园都在一个景区里，到了七月，这里往往一早就有人来。
Old Centre and Inner Stops
老城中心和城里先该去的地方
If you want one historical stop that feels personal rather than ceremonial, go to the Silver Academy, now the Zhou Enlai Youth Study Site Memorial. It began as a Qing-dynasty academy, later became a modern school, and in 1910 the twelve-year-old Zhou Enlai studied here. The rooms are not large, which helps. You can still feel that it was a place where a boy sat at a desk before history got interested in him.
如果只想找一个不那么“供着看”的历史点，那就去银冈书院，也就是周恩来少年读书旧址纪念馆。它起初是清代书院，后来办过新式学堂；1910年，12岁的周恩来就在这里读书。地方并不大，这反倒合适。你还能感觉出，那是一个男孩先坐下来读书、历史后来才找上门来的地方。
Longshou Mountain sits in Yinzhou District, with the Chai River on one side and the Liao River on the other. There are temples, towers, a poem stele for Premier Zhou, and a long enough set of paths that you can spend a quiet afternoon there without having to plan it carefully.
龙首山在银州区里，东边是柴河，西边望着辽河。山上有寺庙、塔、周总理诗碑，还有不少山路，随便走一个安静的下午也够了。
The city centre is still active after dark. Around North Tower the lights come on, the square fills again, and people keep moving through the old street as if it were only another part of the day
晚上，城中心还是活的。北塔一带灯会亮起来，广场又热闹起来，人们继续从老街上穿过去，好像白天只是换了个时间继续。
The blocks between the towers are not museum pieces. There are fruit shops, pharmacies, small noodle places, and people waiting for buses with shopping bags in their hands.
两塔之间的街区也不是博物馆展柜。那边有水果店、药房、小面馆，还有拎着购物袋等公交车的人。
Water, Steam, and Supper
水、蒸汽和晚饭
Lotus Wetland is the newer side of Tieling. The scenic area covers 1,040 hectares and includes the lotus lake, bird island, reed marsh, and children’s park. It is an easy place to spend a slow morning.
莲花湿地是铁岭更新的一面。景区总面积1040公顷，里面有莲花湖、湖心鸟岛、芦苇湿地和儿童公园。这里很适合慢慢耗掉一个上午。
The wetland changes the city’s pace for a while. You hear birds, you see water, and the paths give you enough room to walk without rushing anyone else.
湿地会把城市的节奏放慢一会儿。能听见鸟声，能看见水，路也宽，走起来不用催谁。
If you want the industrial side, go west to Diaobingshan and the Tieling Steam Locomotive Museum. The site has 21 steam locomotives that can still run, and more than 160 film and television productions have used it.
如果想看铁岭更工业的一面，就往西去调兵山，看看铁煤蒸汽机车博物馆。那里有21台还能正常运行的蒸汽机车，前后也有160多部影视作品来取过景。
The old machines are huge and black and still active enough that the place never feels frozen. People come for the locomotives, but they usually stay a little longer than that.
这些老机器又大又黑，还能动，所以这地方不会显得死板。人们原本是来看机车的，最后往往会多待一会儿。
For food, start with fire-baked buns, Dadianzi mutton soup, iron-pot stew, and Tieling roast chicken. If you want something heavier, look for Changtu black-pig farm banquet and Diaobingshan braised pork elbow.
吃的也很直接。先从火勺、大甸子羊汤、铁锅炖和铁岭烧鸡开始。想吃得再重一点，就找昌图黑猪农家宴和调兵山扒肘子。
By rail and road, Tieling is easy enough to reach. Jingha railway, Jingha expressway, Harbin-Dalian high-speed rail, and National Highway 102 all run through the city, and it is about 18 minutes by high-speed rail to Shenyang.
交通上，铁岭并不难到。京哈铁路、京哈高速、哈大高铁和102国道都穿城而过，从这里坐高铁到沈阳大约18分钟。
If you leave Tieling with only a few images, that is normal: North Tower, Silver Academy, Longshou Mountain, the wetland, the steam museum, and a bowl of soup.
离开铁岭时，脑子里只剩下几个画面也很正常：北塔、银冈书院、龙首山、湿地、蒸汽机车博物馆，还有一碗汤。
