Huludao sits where Liaoning turns toward the Bohai Sea, and the city is easiest to read as a day that keeps widening: old wall, sea air, a ferry, a hot spring, and a late dinner in that order. The seafood lovers will be more than happy.
Xingcheng First
Start in Xingcheng Ancient City. Walk through the old gate area, the bell and drum towers, the Wenmiao, and the stone archways, then keep going inside the wall instead of circling back too soon. The city still has people living in it, which changes the way the old places feel.
Jiumenkou is the thing people remember most clearly, and for once the memory is justified. The Great Wall runs right down to the water there. Old official descriptions call it a water wall, and the old name 一片石关 still fits better than most of the neat modern phrases people try to give it.
If it has rained, stay a little longer. Look down from the bridge, watch the river pushing under the stonework, and go into the little museum there before you leave. The place is more interesting when the weather has already touched it.
Sea, Island, and Dinner
For the coast, go to Xingcheng Seaside. The official scenic area stretches for 14 kilometres, and the usual stops are the same for a reason: Xinghai Park, the Three-Reef Bridge, the Chrysanthemum Girl statue, Xinghai Park again if you need a bench, and then Longhuitou at Bijiayan. The 1,670-metre seaside walk links Longhuitou to Bijiayan and ties the whole shore together in one fairly usable loop.
If the weather holds, take the boat to Juehua Island. It sits about 12.5 kilometres offshore, and the official figures give it 13.5 square kilometres of land and 27 kilometres of coastline. The island has old temples, a south beach, stone paths, and enough shade in the right places that you can spend an afternoon without trying very hard.
The boat ride matters too. It gives you the short break the coast needs, and when you come back you are ready for dinner, which should be very specific here; crab, mantis shrimp, sea snails, and the city’s own named dishes, especially Huludao seafood stir-fry, golden-thread pomfret, Xingcheng red-cliff peanut tofu, and Suizhong water tofu. A bag of red-cliff peanuts or a box of Suizhong white pears is worth taking away.
Huludao is good when you let it stay practical. It gives you a wall, a shore, a boat, a hot spring, and a table, and that is already plenty.
