Chuzhou does not need to shout to be noticed. It sits on the edge of Anhui, looking east towards Jiangsu and the wider pull of the Yangtze River Delta; yet it still keeps the manners of a city that knows its own story.

That story begins with geography, but it does not stay there. Chuzhou has long been a place of passage, a city where hills, rivers and roads meet. In older times it was a borderland of control and connection; today it feels more like a hinge that keeps two regions moving together.

Langya Mountain Gives Chuzhou Its Literary Spine

According to Chinese-language government and heritage material, Chuzhou’s best-known landscape is Mount Langya, where Ouyang Xiu turned scenery into literature and literature into memory. His line about the drinker who was really thinking of the hills has outlived dynasties, and Zuiweng Pavilion still gives that sentence a home.

That is the deeper charm of the city. It has culture without fuss. There are temples, stone inscriptions, old paths and a literary glow that feels steady rather than staged. Chuzhou does not sell itself as a grand drama. It offers a quieter thing; a city where the past still has use.
这正是这座城更深的魅力。它有文化,却不张扬。寺庙、摩崖石刻、古道和那一点稳定的文气,都显得从容而不刻意。滁州并不把自己包装成宏大戏剧,而是提供另一种更安静的东西;一个过去仍然有用的城市。
The numbers matter too. Chuzhou’s 2024 GDP reached ¥403.44 billion, making it one of Anhui’s stronger performers. That matters because this is no museum town. It has built its recent rise on manufacturing, new materials, household appliances and equipment industries; in other words, on work that needs speed, links and discipline.

Rails, Industry and A City Moving Closer To Nanjing

The rail story has changed Chuzhou’s mood. The Ningchu intercity railway opened in June 2023 and tied the city more closely to the Nanjing orbit. Chuzhou Railway Station also sits on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed line, so the city now moves with more confidence than its old map would suggest.

That new confidence is visible in the way the city balances old and new. Langya Mountain still draws visitors for its pines, temples and stone tablets; the industrial parks pull in investment; and the urban core is learning how to look modern without losing its softer edges. Chuzhou feels neither frozen nor overfed with self-importance. That is part of the appeal.

In transport terms, Chuzhou is about 50 km from central Nanjing, and the Ningchu line makes that distance feel smaller than the numbers suggest. The city also has a national high-speed rail link through Chuzhou Railway Station; together, those connections make Chuzhou feel less like a border city and more like a city with a wider horizon.
