The case centres on a major theft in Jiangning District. Police say 37 gold items, described in Chinese reporting as gold products or jewellery, were stolen with a total value of around ¥27 million and, coincidentally, a weight of approximately 27 kilograms. The name of the exact shop still does not appear to have been clearly made public, others than it was a “luxury store”.

Yet, that which does look increasingly clear is the date. Chinese reporting repeatedly refers to the Jiangning “5.16” major gold theft case, pointing to 16 May 2026 as the day of the robbery. Some snippets go further and say the theft began in the early hours, while police received the report at around 11:00.

According to Chinese-language reports following a police briefing and reposts linked to China News Weekly, the stolen gold did not stay in Nanjing for long. One suspect, surnamed Tong, fled south by ride-hailing car and was later caught near the China-Vietnam border in Chongzuo, Guangxi.

Police say 8.75 kilograms were found on Tong when he was intercepted roughly 100 metres from the border. Another key suspect, surnamed Wang, allegedly fled to Thailand. He was later apprehended in Bangkok and extradited back to China. In total, 11 suspects have reportedly been arrested.
