Chaoyang is easier to understand if you start on foot. Murong Street still runs through the old centre, the towers sit where they should, and the city keeps a lot of space between its older pieces. That spacing matters here.

Old Towers and a Street That Is Still Used

At the north end of Murong Street stands North Tower, the city’s best-known landmark and, according to the provincial heritage record, the oldest surviving Buddhist pagoda in northeast China. In the evening, the square below it fills with drums, songs, and yangko dancers.

South Tower sits farther down the same axis, just south of the Xinhua Road-Murong Street junction. It is a Liao-dynasty square brick pagoda, 42.6 metres high, with thirteen eaves. The tower is easier to read up close than from a distance.

If you want a quick sense of the city, stand between the two towers and walk the street once without hurrying. You will pass shopfronts, traffic, and the ordinary business of a neighbourhood that has not been turned into a set.

Fossils and a Half Day Outside Town

The bird-fossil geopark in Longcheng District is the place to go when you want the stranger side of Chaoyang. The museum holds the world’s largest collection of Mesozoic fossil specimens, and the site includes a geological corridor, an excavation area, and the world’s first wood-fossil forest.

Niuheliang should not be squeezed in between two other errands. It sits on the Lingyuan-Jianping border, covers about eight square kilometres, and includes the goddess temple, altar, burial mounds, and the red-hill culture remains dated to roughly 5500 to 5000 years ago. Treat it as a separate half day.

Phoenix Mountain is the easy climb. It sits east of the centre, rises to 660 metres, and has three ancient pagodas and four old temples on its slopes. Go in the late afternoon if you can.

For food, start with 朝阳小米粥, then look for 羊汤烧饼, 荞麦碗坨, 排骨蒸饺, 南园扒猪脸, or 酸菜火锅 if the weather has turned cold. You can arrive by the Chaoyang-Linghai high-speed line or by Chaoyang Airport.

Chaoyang works best when you let it stay specific. North Tower, South Tower, Murong Street, the fossil park, Niuheliang, Phoenix Mountain, a bowl of millet porridge. That is enough for a first visit.
