Suizhou sits in a hilly belt where the Jianghan Plain gives way to the Central Plain. The roads rise early, and the built-up parts sit in the folds of the land. A 2024 city bulletin puts Suizhou’s GDP at ¥144.235 billion. Other city data place its permanent population at just over 2 million.

Suizhou is known nationally for special-purpose vehicles and for shiitake mushrooms. Tea sits alongside both, and those three labels keep coming back in the city’s official material.

Shennong, Bells and the City Centre
神农、编钟与市中心
Suizhou’s calendar still bends around Shennong. Every year, on the 26th day of the fourth lunar month, the city holds its root-seeking festival at the Yan Emperor Hometown Scenic Area.
随州的时间表到现在还是会绕着神农转。每年农历四月二十六，这里都会在炎帝故里景区办寻根节。
The main sites there include the ancestral hall, Shennong well, Sun and Moon halls, the stele and Shennong Cave. That is enough to make the festival feel fixed to a place rather than to a slogan.

The Tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng was found in 1978 at Leigudun. The excavation produced more than 15,000 relics, and the bronze chime bells alone numbered 65 pieces and weighed nearly five tonnes.
曾侯乙墓1978年在擂鼓墩发现。出土文物超过1.5万件，光是编钟就有65件，重约5吨。
Those bells carry 3,755 inscribed characters and span five octaves. They now sit in Hubei Provincial Museum in Wuhan.

Around Suizhou, the other major visitor sites include Dahong Mountain, Shennong Cave and the ginkgo valley. Suizhou Cultural Park gives the centre of town a more ordinary stop in the same list.

The Catholic connection begins in 1937, when the Apostolic Prefecture of Suixian was erected from territory taken from the Apostolic Vicariate of Hankou. That line has been in the records for nearly 90 years.

Rail access is no longer just about one station. The 12306 booking system lists Suizhou, Suizhou South, Suixian and Guangshui among the local stations.

For food, shiitake mushrooms are the safest starting point. They appear in local markets, in dried form and in cooked dishes, while tea remains the other crop to remember.

The city’s red-history list includes Jiukouyan, the headquarters site of the New Fourth Army Fifth Division. It also names other sites in Suixian and Guangshui.
