Today’s last concrete pour at Nanjing North Railway Station felt like one of those construction moments that actually means something. The shell is now there. The question for Jiangbei is what comes next, and whether the rest of the city can keep up.

The main concrete structure of the station building was topped out on 20 July, moving the project from civil construction into roof steel assembly, secondary structure work and interior decoration. That sounds technical. It is. It is also the point at which a building starts to become a station.

According to Nanjing Daily, citing China Railway Shanghai Group, the new station sits north of Laoshan Scenic Area, with Zhujiashan River on one side and Laoshan National Forest Park on the other. Its total floor area is about 692,100 square metres.

A Giant Station for a Giant Promise

The station is planned with four floors above ground and two below, plus 16 platforms and 30 lines. High-speed, intercity and regular railway services will all meet here, with routes including the Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu high-speed railway along the Yangtze, the Nanjing-Huai’an Intercity and the Nanjing-Bengbu Intercity.

The Nanjinger has followed the wider Jiangbei transport story for some time, and the mood has rarely been patient. Nanjing North has long been sold as the railway piece that helps balance a city still heavily pulled toward Nanjing South Railway Station.

《The Nanjinger》

That is also why the reader comments under the latest report are worth noticing. One said simply, “地铁跟上”, meaning the metro must keep pace. Another wrote, “期待早日通车”, hoping for an early opening. Short comments. Clear mood.

Concrete Is Done, Patience Is Not

The station will also connect with Nanjing Station and Nanjing South through the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge and the Shangyuanmen river-crossing channel. On paper, that gives Nanjing a much more complete rail hub. On the ground, people want buses, roads and metro lines to arrive at the same time.

The project has not been short of waiting. Like Nanjing Metro Line 11 and, before it, the long-delayed Line 5, Jiangbei’s big transport promises have often felt slower than the skyline rising around them. Stations are never just about trains. They are about whether daily life becomes easier.

Today’s topping out is therefore good news with a familiar warning attached. Nanjing North is visibly closer. But for Jiangbei residents, the real opening day will not be when the steel and glass shine, but when getting there no longer feels like a project of its own.
