Set on Shandong’s eastern tip, Weihai is a city that faces the sea more than it turns inland. It looks across water towards the Korean Peninsula, lives with a long coast and carries a history that is maritime, military and quietly modern.
The city is not large by China’s coastal standards, but it feels extensive because the shoreline keeps pulling the eye outward. Weihai has beaches, bays, islands, ports, universities and a strong tourist pull; it is also a place where the past is never far from the present.
The city’s own 2024 statistical communiqué on weihai.gov.cn says Weihai’s permanent population stood at 2.9146 million, while the municipal homepage today highlights airport route additions, bus upgrades and a steady stream of city news. The point is simple enough; Weihai is not a postcard, it is a working coastal city.
Port, Coastline and a City Built for the Sea
Weihai’s geography explains most of its character. The coast is long, broken and full of coves; the city sits beside the Yellow Sea and looks towards Korea. That position has made it a port city for trade, a departure point for ferries and a natural place for fishing, tourism and marine industries.
The modern city also has a strong transport habit. Weihai has two big rail names that matter to visitors and locals alike, Weihai Station and Weihai North Station, while Weihai Dashuipo International Airport ties the city to a wider domestic and international network. On the homepage, the city has recently been talking up summer route additions, which feels entirely in character for a place built around movement.
Chinese historical material puts a lot of weight on Weihai’s role as a seafront outpost. It was long tied to the old Weihaiwei system and later to the Beiyang Fleet, which makes the city’s history feel less like abstract chronology and more like a chain of concrete sites. That is the sort of detail the China Jiawu War Museum preserves so well.
Liu Gong Island, War Memory and a Harder Past
Liu Gong Island is the city’s most serious place. The museum says the protected memorial zone includes 28 sites, among them the Beiyang Navy Admiralty, the naval school, the Dragon King Temple, forts and signal structures. It was opened to the public in 1985 and later recognised as a first-class national museum.
That concentration of relics gives Weihai a different weight from many coastal cities that lean only on scenery. Here, the sea is beautiful, but it also remembers conflict. The island and the city have inherited the memory of the First Sino-Japanese War, the Beiyang Fleet and the foreign concessions era in a way that still shapes local identity.
At the same time, Weihai has turned that past into a civic strength rather than a burden. The city has built a reputation for clean coastal air, marine tourism, education and a calm urban rhythm. Its universities and development zones give it a younger, more technical layer; its ports and beaches give it an older one.
Weihai is the kind of city that can host a museum on war memory in the morning and a beach walk at dusk without contradiction. That combination is what makes it memorable; not loud, not hurried, but always facing something beyond itself.
Weihai is served by Weihai Dashuipo International Airport, Weihai Station and Weihai North Station; road and ferry links connect it to the rest of Shandong and to the wider Bohai and Yellow Sea area. That is fitting for a city whose whole story is still shaped by arrival, departure and the line where land meets water.
