General Jonathan Wainwright, the highest-ranking American captured in the Second World War, was held from December 1944 at a secret camp in a Manchurian coal town, and weighed under 45 kilograms at 1.88 metres when freed.
The camp opened on 1 December 1944 inside the Japanese army’s North Barracks at what was then Xi’an County, now Liaoyuan, and held 16 senior Allied officials and their attendants, 34 people in all, among them the British general Arthur Percival and the governor of Hong Kong, Sir Mark Young. A six-man American team freed them on 19 August 1945, 267 days after they arrived, and Wainwright and Percival later stood behind General MacArthur at the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay.
According to People’s Daily, it is the only camp for senior Allied prisoners that survives in China. It was largely forgotten for six decades because the Japanese destroyed records before surrendering, according to Xinhua, until American and Taiwanese researchers came looking for it in the early 2000s, and it was named a national patriotic education demonstration base in 2017, according to The Paper.
From a Farmer’s Well to a Coal Town
Coal was found in 1911, when a farmer named Chen Decai dug a well for drinking water and hit black stones. Japanese capital moved in from 1917, and the Meiji Xi’an coal mine controlled most of the field by 1919, according to the Liaoyuan Miners’ Tombs Exhibition Hall. After 1949 the Xi’an vertical shaft was one of the 156 key projects, and Liaoyuan at one point supplied nearly 3.5 percent of China’s coal, according to Xinhua.
The city was called Xi’an, meaning western peace, from 1902, and was renamed Liaoyuan on 3 April 1952 because Shaanxi already had a Xi’an; the new name means source of the Liao, after the East Liao River that rises here. Coal once made up about 80 percent of its economy and less than 2 percent by 2015, according to Sina, and the city was named a resource-exhausted transition pilot in 2005 and 2008.
What replaced it is socks. Liaoyuan made its first pair in 1936 and now produces about 3.5 billion pairs a year in a park of 1,210 firms and 41,000 machines, according to the Jilin Daily, a trade that the saying “Zhuji in the south, Liaoyuan in the north” ranks alongside China’s other great sock town.
A River’s Source with Little Water
Liaoyuan’s official land-use plan describes its water resources as extremely scarce, while central Jilin has only 19 percent of the national average per head, according to The Paper. The city named for the source of the Liao is therefore supplied through a diversion project from the Songhua River’s Fengman Reservoir, with a 109.8-kilometre trunk line that splits at Fengjialing into branches for Changchun, Siping and Liaoyuan; its first phase passed acceptance in December 2021.
According to Liaoyuan’s 2025 statistical communiqué, GDP reached ¥54.709 billion, up 5.7 percent, with per capita output of ¥60,619. The permanent population was 888,500, with 2,300 births against 9,300 deaths.
Getting to Liaoyuan is harder than it should be: it is the only prefecture-level city in Jilin without high-speed rail, and the one direct train from Changchun takes about 2 hours 40 minutes. The mayor said in 2026 that the 81.6-kilometre Liaoyuan section of a Changchun–Siping–Liaoyuan–Tonghua high-speed line has its route and station site fixed, with the city aiming for it to open by the end of the 15th Five-Year Plan period.
Of the 20-odd rooms where Wainwright, Percival and the other prisoners were held, only five survive, restored to show how they lived, according to China News.
