Mid-journey between Shanghai and Nanjing, a routine high-speed train service turned into an improvised delivery room, when a lady went into labour in a cramped toilet; a responding urologist then found himself facing the most unexpected emergency of his career.
从上海开往南京的高铁途中，一趟原本平静的列车突然变成了临时产房。一名孕妇在狭小的卫生间内突然临产；听到广播求助后，一名泌尿外科医生赶到现场，面对职业生涯中最意外的紧急情况。
The woman was more than 36 weeks pregnant. At around 3.33pm on 5 September, she called for help after the baby’s head had begun to emerge. Train attendants quickly arrived, followed by Fang Yu, a urologist from Shanghai Changhai Hospital, and Lu Fanglin, a thoracic surgeon from Shanghai General Hospital.
这名孕妇已经怀孕36周多。9月5日下午3时33分左右，胎儿头部已经露出，她随即在卫生间内呼救。列车乘务人员迅速赶到现场，随后，来自上海长海医院的泌尿外科医生方玉和来自上海市第一人民医院的胸外科医生陆方林也赶来帮忙。
Shanghai Release reported that Fang had been travelling home while on leave when he heard the emergency announcement. He later admitted that he was initially unsure what to do; he had never delivered a baby before, and his medical training was in another field.
据“上海发布”报道，当时正在休假返乡途中的方玉听到列车广播后立即赶往现场。他事后坦言，自己起初也有些不知所措；他从未接生过孩子，而且自己的专业是泌尿外科。
A Delivery Room Measured in Square Metres
一间只有几平方米的临时产房
Inside the train toilet, there was little room to move and no obstetric equipment. Fang supported the baby’s head and helped the mother adjust her position. The birth followed within minutes. After wrapping the newborn in a towel, however, the doctors still had to deal with the umbilical cord.
列车卫生间空间狭窄，既没有足够的活动空间，也没有专业产科设备。方玉托住胎儿头部，并协助孕妇调整姿势。几分钟后，婴儿顺利出生。然而，用毛巾包好新生儿后，医生们还必须处理脐带。
Fang contacted Cai Shengyun, an obstetrics professor at Changhai Hospital, by video link. Cai instructed the team to disinfect the area carefully, place clamps at both ends of the cord and then complete the cutting procedure. She also advised the family to tell hospital staff about the conditions of the delivery once they arrived.
方玉随后通过视频连线联系了长海医院妇产科教授蔡圣芸。蔡教授指导现场人员认真完成消毒，在脐带两端夹上止血钳后再进行断脐操作。她还提醒家属，抵达医院后必须向接诊医生说明孩子是在缺乏专业设备的情况下出生的。
The boy was born at 3.46pm. He cried loudly and kicked his legs, signs that reassured those around him. Railway staff and police officers kept the carriage orderly while the doctors, attendants and the family concentrated on mother and child.
下午3时46分，男婴在列车上顺利降生。他哭声洪亮，还不断踢腿，让现场人员稍稍松了一口气。列车工作人员和乘警负责维持车厢秩序，医生、乘务人员及家属则全力照看产妇和婴儿。
A Green Channel at Nanjing South
南京南站开通绿色通道
When the train reached Nanjing South Railway Station, the mother and baby were transferred through an emergency channel to a nearby hospital. Medical examinations found both to be healthy. The family later telephoned the doctors and railway staff to thank them.
列车抵达南京南站后，铁路方面迅速开通绿色通道，将产妇和婴儿转送至附近医院。经过检查，母子二人均无大碍。事后，家属专门致电向现场医务人员和铁路工作人员表示感谢。
For Fang, the episode was a first. In more than a decade as a doctor, he had treated many patients, but never delivered a child. He said even the umbilical cords of his own two children had been cut by someone else.
对从医十余年的方玉来说，这也是一次人生首次经历。过去，他救治过许多患者，却从未亲手接生过孩子。就连自己两个孩子出生时，脐带也不是由他剪断的。
Fang credited both medical instinct and the emergency training provided by a military hospital. His advice to expectant mothers was more cautious than dramatic; during late pregnancy, long-distance travel should be avoided where possible, with the risks assessed before any journey begins. On this train, luck arrived in the form of a doctor who happened to be listening.
方玉认为，这次能够及时应对，既有医务人员面对危急情况时的本能，也得益于军队医院平时开展的急救训练。他提醒孕晚期孕妇，尽量避免长途出行；如确需外出，应提前评估风险。对这趟列车上的母子而言，幸运的是，广播响起时，恰好有一名医生正在认真听着。
