Not arriving politely, Anyang comes with too much history and not much interest in apologising for that. You feel it in the ruins, of course, but also in the ordinary city around them, which is often the more convincing part.
The first thing I remember there is a child in the National Museum of Chinese Writing trying to copy an oracle-bone character with deep suspicion, as if the character had personally caused trouble. That felt right. Anyang is a place where writing still has a bit of dirt on it.
From Bones to Writing
Yinxu is the obvious centre of gravity, but that phrase makes it sound tidier than it is. You move among pits, foundations, bronzes and paths that feel old without becoming theatrical. Then there are the oracle bones themselves, or what is left of them in cases and reconstructions and school displays, those cracked pieces that stopped being scraps and started becoming a script.
That part never quite loses its force. People keep saying this is where Chinese writing began. It is a big claim, and maybe that is why it survives. Standing there, the claim feels less like a slogan and more like a fact that has been asked to keep working for 3,000 years.
The National Museum of Chinese Writing helps keep all of that from drifting into abstraction. It is serious, but not sealed off. School groups use it. Families use it. The city seems to want the story to stay in circulation, not just in storage.
Old Capital, New Noise
The rest of Anyang is less ceremonial and probably more honest. There are old streets, night-market smells, roast chicken, school groups, traffic, fruit sellers and the ordinary north Henan habit of getting on with the day while standing on very old ground. That mix matters more than any single monument.
Xun County and Chaoge keep the older layers visible. Not polished, thankfully. A gate, a wall, a stall selling fried things, a street with a few people moving slowly. Enough. Ancient capital memory does not need a spotlight to be felt here. It sits there and waits.
And then there is the Red Flag Canal, which belongs to the Anyang family even though it lives over in Linzhou. That project was dug by hand in the 1960s, which still sounds impossible if you say it out loud. It is one of those places where the story is not just about water, but about people deciding to keep going when the work was clearly too much.
Getting there from Nanjing is straightforward. Direct high-speed trains from Nanjing South to Anyang East usually take about 4.5 to 5 hours. Long enough to feel the distance. Short enough that the city still feels connected to the same conversation.
A first visit does not need a neat checklist. Go to Yinxu and spend time there. Go to the National Museum of Chinese Writing and watch children wrestle with the script. Then eat something ordinary. A bowl of soup, roast chicken, whatever is hot and available. That is the trick with Anyang. It gives you the start of writing and then, ten minutes later, lunch.
Anyang feels crowded with memory, but not in a bad way. More like a table with too many things on it that are all worth keeping. The bones, the smoke, the old capital, the children copying characters badly, the night market, the chicken, the canal, the stubbornness. It is not tidy. That is part of the point.
