This day, 9 November, in 1970, President Charles de Gaulle of the French Republic passed away. During his administration, de Gaulle pursued an independent foreign policy and actively developed relations with third world countries, recognising the People’s Republic of China in January of 1964, as such becoming the first Western country to establish ambassadorial-level diplomatic relations.
