This day, 26 March, 1987, the governments of China and Portugal initialed the “Joint Statement on the Question of Macau”, which stated that the government of the People’s Republic of China will resume the exercise of sovereignty over Macau on December 20, 1999. Thereto, the Chinese would establish a special administrative region in Macau in accordance with the principle of “One Country, Two Systems”.
