A group of 12 students from Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (NUTCM) chose to spend their Spring Festival holiday helping coronavirus-stricken Wuhan. Together, they made 2,000 TCM sachets in just one week.

The story began when, inside NUTCM, three generations of TCM practitioners mustered their special skills to work together on various fronts to prevent and control the epidemic.

The team was led by Professor Zhou Zhongying, a 92-year-old Chinese medicine master and former president of NUTCM. Together, they studied and formulated a TCM treatment plan for Covid-19 in Jiangsu Province that comprised a formula for the contents of a sachet of medicine.

Not far away, the group of students had in actual fact found themselves still in Nanjing on account of clinical internship, scientific research or simply because their homes were far away.

Hence, they found themselves still on campus during the winter vacation.

When hearing the news, the students couldn’t sit still, they told China Youth Daily. They immediately contacted the Communist Youth League Committee of NUTCM and expressed their desire to do their best to make a batch of sachets for those working on the the front line of the epidemic war.

Subsequently, the 12 university students set up a volunteer service group to help avail them of the raw materials. However, due to the epidemic situation, the materials and packaging were hard to come by and there was much difficulty with logistics.

Inspired by the determination of the students, the campus dormitory matron took the initiative to join in. “We see you, the students, being so positive. Although we can’t assist much, we can help with packaging!”, said Matron Wu.

As a result of the concerted efforts of the 12, assisted by all those around, 2,000 anti-epidemic sachets were yesterday shipped to Jiangxia Hospital in Wuhan. Upon receipt, Shi Suofang, Captain of the National TCM Medical Team (Jiangsu), Vice President of Jiangxia Fangcai Hospital, and Director of the Respiratory Department of NUTCM, called the school to express his gratitude to the students.

Yin Xianheng, a 2017 clinical medical student at the uni, said, “We were delayed in getting the production materials. Actually, it should have been possible to do it much faster”.
