On 26 August 2018, immediately following the latest Didi Chuxing murder case, which The Nanjinger reported yesterday, the Nanjing Municipal Government and the Nanjing Municipal Transportation Bureau released a statement on its public WeChat account, commanding the city’s two main car share companies, Didi Chuxing and Meituan, to abide by stricter safety measures.

The Transportation Bureau announced, “It is necessary to promptly clear all vehicles on the platform that do not have legal operating qualifications, and drivers who do not have the qualifications for operation. And [to] ensure that the vehicles and drivers provided by the online and offline services are consistent”, as reported by The Paper.

“To compete fairly, we must not disturb the normal market order, damage the legitimate rights and interests of other operators. Strictly implement the carrier’s responsibilities, and fulfill the main responsibility of the enterprise such as operational safety, operation management, and information security, and jointly promote the health and orderly development of the industry”, the report goes on to say.

Didi and Meituan have said that, “they will strictly abide by the legal provisions and the bottom line of corporate responsibility. In accordance with the requirements put forward by the Nanjing Municipal Government, they will conscientiously rectify and implement, and earnestly fulfill the main responsibility of the enterprise”.
