Guigang is a port on the Xi River, the water road to the Pearl River Delta; the Taiping rose against the Qing on 11 January 1851 in a village it now administers, and its name is younger than the book on its Han tombs.
贵港是西江上的港口城市,经西江水路可通珠江三角洲;一八五一年一月十一日太平天国在它今天管辖的一个村庄起义反清,而它的名字比那本研究其汉墓的书还要年轻。
Guigang means “Gui port”, and the city is also called the Lotus City. It was Guizhou under the Tang and became Guixian, Gui County, under the Ming in 1369.
贵港意为”贵之港”,又称荷城。唐代这里叫贵州,明朝一三六九年改称贵县。
The State Council abolished Guixian on 20 December 1988 and set up a county-level city of Guigang, which became a prefecture-level city on 27 October 1995. It has three districts, one county and one county-level city, Guiping.
一九八八年十二月二十日国务院撤销贵县、设立县级贵港市,一九九五年十月二十七日升为地级市,现辖三个区、一个县和一个县级市桂平市。
Where the Taiping Began
太平天国的起点
Hong Xiuquan launched the armed uprising at Jintian village in Guiping on 11 January 1851 and proclaimed the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, and the site was listed as a national protected site in the first batch of 1961, according to China’s heritage map. More than 10,000 God Worshippers had gathered there since July 1850, according to Baidu Baike.
据中国遗产地图介绍,一八五一年一月十一日洪秀全在桂平金田村发动武装起义、建号太平天国,该遗址一九六一年列入第一批全国重点文物保护单位。据百度百科介绍,自一八五零年七月起,一万多名拜上帝会众云集金田。
The uprising site, known as the Jintian camp, sits on Rhino Ridge 28 kilometres from Guiping town, according to the Guangxi archives website. Local legend says the God Worshippers ran 12 forges at Wei Changhui’s house and hid the weapons in a pool at the foot of the camp, and a 1974 dig found charcoal, iron slag and a rusted spearhead there, according to the same source.

Waterway freight carried was 263.71 million tonnes in 2025, up 3.6 percent, while the port itself handled 85.76 million tonnes, up 2.7 percent, and 475,100 standard containers, up 22.8 percent, according to the same communiqué. Container trains now run to Qinzhou Port and the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, and every county has an expressway, a high-speed railway and a high-grade waterway, according to the same source.

Guigang station lies on the Nanning–Guangzhou high-speed line, 40 minutes from Nanning East and about two and a half hours from Guangzhou South, according to national train timetables.

A Book Four Months Too Early

In June 1976 workers extending the Guixian fertiliser plant struck gilded bronze chariot fittings, and archaeologists excavating the Luobowan Tomb No. 1 from July to November hoped for a second Mawangdui, according to Guigang’s civilisation website. The tomb of the early Western Han had been robbed, but it still held more than 1,000 objects, and its owner was probably the highest official of the Nanyue kingdom’s Guilin commandery, though some think he was the Xiou chieftain, according to Baidu Baike.
据贵港文明网介绍,一九七六年六月,贵县化肥厂扩建厂房的民工挖出鎏金铜车马器,考古队七月至十一月发掘罗泊湾一号墓,期望出现”第二个马王堆”。据百度百科介绍,这座西汉早期墓葬虽已被盗,仍出土一千多件器物,墓主可能是南越国桂林郡的最高官吏,也有人认为是西瓯君。
A wooden slip in the tomb lists its grave goods, and one line reads “one low table, three wooden dogs, a silk bag”, according to the journal Archaeology and Cultural Relics. Beneath the burial chamber lay seven attendants, six women and one male, according to an account of the dig on Sohu.

The excavation report, “The Han Tombs at Luobowan, Guixian, Guangxi”, was published in August 1988. Four months later, on 20 December 1988, the State Council abolished Guixian and established the county-level city of Guigang.
