Two thousand soldiers from eight nations, trying to reach Beijing by train in June 1900, found their track torn up again and again by Boxer fighters; at Langfang, Qing troops including Dong Fuxiang’s Gansu forces joined them, and the combined force drove the expedition back towards Tianjin.

The wider Seymour Expedition eventually suffered 62 killed and 232 wounded. The fighting at Langfang became known in China as the Langfang Victory and helped force Seymour to abandon the railway and retreat towards Tianjin.

A County that Rose Up Ten Days Early

Thirty-eight years later, in July 1938, a very different uprising spread across eastern Hebei. It began at the village of Gangbei in Luan county on 6 July, ten days earlier than originally planned, after local organisers realised Japanese authorities had learned of the plot.

According to an account published by the Langfang municipal government, villages across the north-west of Sanhe county, now part of Langfang, rose up almost to the last household, and fighters from the village of Junxia took part in the attack on a Japanese stronghold at Yangezhuang, near Mafang.

The uprising forced a retreat westward that October after heavy losses, but it contributed to the Jin-Cha-Ji and Jirechaw resistance bases that followed.

Within an Hour of Three International Airports

Langfang now sits inside what the city government calls the golden triangle formed by Beijing, Tianjin and the new Xiong’an area, and has long been nicknamed the pearl of the Beijing-Tianjin corridor; its main urban area lies 40 kilometres from Beijing, 60 from Tianjin and 80 from Xiong’an.

Langfang is in two pieces. Its main body lies south of Beijing and Tianjin, but its three northern units, Sanhe city, Dachang Hui Autonomous County and Xianghe county, known together as the Northern Three Counties, form an exclave of roughly 1,270 square kilometres wedged between the two municipalities, with Dachang touching Beijing to its west and Tianjin to its east. The exclave was left on the map when nine Hebei counties joined Beijing in 1958 and five more joined Tianjin by 1973. According to a Tencent News account, its permanent population was 1.57 million in 2023 against 1.40 million registered residents, and Sanhe’s western edge lies less than 30 kilometres from Tiananmen Square.

Langfang’s economic output reached ¥404.05 billion in 2025, up 5.8 percent on the year, led by modern commerce and logistics alongside electronics and information technology, with biomedicine, aerospace and high-end equipment manufacturing among its other priority industries.

The city lies within an hour’s drive of three international airports, Beijing Capital, Tianjin Binhai and Beijing Daxing, which sits directly on Langfang’s doorstep, as well as the port of Tianjin.

The Beijing–Tianjin railway the Boxers tore up in June 1900 still runs through Langfang today, now one of many rail lines converging on the city.
