Baise lies where Guangxi meets Yunnan and Guizhou, on the Right River, which the uprising took its alternative name from.

On 11 December 1929 a Guangxi garrison battalion, an instructors’ corps and Right River peasant forces rose in Baise and founded the Seventh Red Army, with Zhang Yunyi as commander. A Right River Soviet government followed the next day, with Lei Jingtian as chairman, and the army’s main force left the area in October 1930.

The first Palaeolithic site in the Baise Basin was found in 1973, and handaxes among its tools were recognised in 1986, according to the Yunqi Academy. More than 113 sites lie on the fourth terrace of the Right River, and they have produced over 10,000 artefacts, according to the journal Quaternary Sciences.

A 2000 paper in Science argued that the Baise handaxes challenged the long-standing view that early East Asian toolmakers lacked the sophisticated handaxe technology found farther west, according to Quaternary Sciences.
