Shuangyashan takes its name from a pair of hills on its north side that look like ducks lying down, though the city, not the hills, is the newcomer: farmers found coal outcrops there in 1914, and the city was founded only in 1956.
双鸭山的名字取自市区北部一对形似卧鸭的山峰,但真正年轻的是这座城市而不是山:一九一四年农民在这里发现了露头煤,而建市要到一九五六年。
Under Japanese rule in the 1930s the area was worked for gold and coal, the Shuangyashan Mining Bureau was founded in 1947, the area became a mining district in 1954, and it became a city in 1956 with 83,600 people.
二十世纪三十年代日本占领期间,这一带被开采金矿和煤炭;一九四七年成立双鸭山矿务局,一九五四年设矿区,一九五六年设市,当时全市人口八万三千六百人。
Long before the mines, the area held an ancient walled city at Fenglin, about 2,000 years old, found in 1984.
在矿井出现之前很久,这一带就有一座约两千年历史的凤林古城,一九八四年被发现。

According to the Shuangyashan government, the mining bureau was set up at Lingdong, on the site of the old Fu’an mine, in June 1947. By 1957 it ran five mines and raw coal output reached 2.32 million tonnes, and the city began to turn from a single-product coal town into an industrial one, according to the Jianshan district government.
据双鸭山市人民政府介绍,一九四七年六月,双鸭山矿务局在岭东原福安煤矿建立。据尖山区人民政府介绍,到一九五七年,矿务局已有五个煤矿,原煤产量达二百三十二万吨,双鸭山开始由单一的煤炭城市向综合性工业城市转化。
The coal downturn showed in 2023, when the city’s six pillar industries shrank 7.6 percent in value added, coal by 11.4 percent and coal chemicals by 22.3 percent, according to its statistical communiqué. In 2025 coal output reached 24.82 million tonnes, double the level at the end of the previous five-year plan and the highest in the province, according to the city’s government work report, and the coal industry’s value added rose 13.1 percent while steel fell 39.3 percent, coal chemicals 16.3 percent and building materials 9.4 percent, according to the 2025 communiqué.

According to the 2025 communiqué, GDP reached ¥57.11 billion, up 4.2 percent, with the primary sector at 35.7 percent, the secondary at 20.1 percent and services at 44.2 percent. Retail sales were ¥12.40 billion, up 2.9 percent, with sales of household appliances and audiovisual equipment up 17.2 percent and new-energy vehicles up 31.1 percent. Grain output was 12.41 billion jin, about 6.2 million tonnes, of which 5.95 billion jin was corn, the largest crop.

The registered population was 1.2898 million at the end of 2025, down from 1.3361 million a year earlier, and 31.4 percent were aged 60 or over, according to the same communiqué.

The Easternmost Station

Shuangyashan joined the high-speed network on 6 December 2021, when the Mudanjiang–Jiamusi line opened with a station at Shuangyashan West, then China’s easternmost high-speed station; Harbin is under two and a half hours away, according to the Shuangyashan government.

The Fenglin ancient city, found on the north bank of the Qixing River, is about 2,000 years old and the oldest ancient city excavated in Heilongjiang, according to the Heilongjiang Overseas Chinese Federation.
据黑龙江省归国华侨联合会介绍,在七星河北岸发现的凤林古城约有两千年历史,是黑龙江已发掘古城中年代最久远的一座。
