Canadian doctor Tillson Harrison first delivered badly needed medical supplies to the Handan International Peace Hospital in September 1946. Four months later, he set out from Shanghai with another convoy through Nationalist-controlled territory; a journey that should have taken three days took 14, and Harrison never completed it.

Harrison had already lived an unusually eventful life before reaching China. Born in Tillsonburg, Ontario, in 1881, he had once served as a doctor to Pancho Villa’s forces in Mexico, surviving a death sentence from Villa’s enemies only because he was the one qualified physician available, and later spent the First World War caring for the 200,000 men of the Chinese Labour Corps.

From 1941 to 1946 he served as ship’s doctor aboard the steamer Demodocus, ferrying supplies across the Indian Ocean for Lord Mountbatten’s Southeast Asia Command; to qualify for relief work in China with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration in 1946, he falsified his birth date, subtracting seven years from his true age.

Harrison died on the morning of 10 January 1947, found dead in his bed at a hostel after falling ill on the road; by the official record of his falsified age, he was 59, though he was in fact 66.

A memorial service was held in Shanghai that February, attended by Soong Ching-ling; the Handan International Peace Hospital Harrison had supplied the previous September was renamed the Harrison International Peace Hospital in his honour, and later relocated to Hengshui, where it is now the city’s only Grade III-A comprehensive hospital.

Harrison has also been described as a real-life Indiana Jones; his daughter Rosalind later claimed that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg had interviewed her about her father’s adventures. He remains largely unknown in his own country, though Canadian prime minister Brian Mulroney sent a message marking what was then believed to be the centenary of Harrison’s birth in 1988, seven years after his actual centenary.

Hengshui is also home to the Jizhou school of inside painting, founded by Wang Xisan after he trained under the sons of Beijing’s Ye school masters in the late 1950s, becoming their first disciple from outside the family; Wang went on to invent a bent metal-handled brush that could change direction inside a sealed vessel.

The technique involves painting a reversed image onto the inner wall of a small vessel, most often a snuff bottle, through an opening sometimes no wider than a grain of rice; the Ministry of Culture named Hengshui the Hometown of Chinese Inside-Painting Art, and the craft was added to China’s national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006.

The Jizhou school now employs tens of thousands of people in and around Hengshui, with combined annual sales exceeding ¥1 billion, and has expanded from snuff bottles into crystal balls, vases and other painted glassware.

Hengshui’s economic output reached ¥201.18 billion in 2025, up 5.5 percent on the year, built in part on a cluster of narrow industrial specialisms: Anping county is known for wire mesh and has more recently expanded into specialist glass for high-speed rail carriages; Zaoqiang county has a major fibreglass-reinforced-plastic industry; while Taocheng district specialises in engineering rubber.

The city sits at the point where the Beijing–Kowloon railway crosses the Shijiazhuang–Dezhou line, a junction the sociologist Fei Xiaotong once called the golden crossroads; Hengshui North station, opened on the Shijiazhuang–Jinan high-speed line in December 2017, puts both provincial capitals under an hour away.
