The world’s first test tube baby with non-invasive chromosomal screening (NICS) was born at 14:48 on Mar 5 at the Reproductive Center of Wuxi Women and Children’s Hospital, announced the hospital on the morning of Mar 14.

The baby is now in sound health condition. The two-year project is jointly completed by the hospital, the Reproductive Center of the General Hospital of Nanjing Military Area Command and Yikon Genomics Co., Ltd.

NICS can help doctors understand the embryonic chromosomal conditions for successful transplantation.

“The NICS technology only needs to collect the culture for the screening. It is easier and has lower requirements for technical equipment and personnel. The technology is very suitable for some grass-roots hospitals or reproductive centers,” said Lu Sijia, CEO of Yikon Genomics, adding that China now has more than 200 medical institutions who are qualified to do “test-tube baby” and these institutions can use NICS technology. The technology is expected to benefit hundreds of thousands of people.
