Swiping the door card for the dorm, the lights inside will be automatically turned on; the security system will be activated once you leave the dorm; you can monitor and control the facilities in your dorm in a real-time manner by tapping on your cell phone, and even receive messages from the dorm via the Internet…

This is the “smart dorm” retrofit program by Qian Kehan, a student from the School of Computing of Changzhou Institute of Technology.

Qian Kehan said his idea originated from many embarrassing moments in life: Some may forget to close windows, and they will feel so cold the next morning; some may forget to bring the bed room key and lock themselves outside…An intelligent system may prevent these problems.

Qian Kehan began his “smart dorm” renovation from last November. At present, the security system he designed is composed of two parts: monitoring and infrared detection. Discarded USB cameras, which are directly connected with the server, are mainly used for monitoring. The infrared detection covers the path that must be passed after the dorm door is opened. Once the signal is disconnected, the high-decibel alarm will be sounded, and an alarm message will be sent to the cell phone via the network.

In order to further improve his cloud platform system, Qian Kehan is going to study the single-chip system by himself in May.
