This day, 9 July, in 1971, then US National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger feigned illness while in Pakistan to make a 48-hour secret visit to China. There, Premier Zhou Enlai and Kissinger held talks for 11 hours, reaching an agreement as to President Nixon’s visit to China and the draft announcement of both Kissinger’s visit and Nixon’s invitation thereto, the first ever by a US president to PRC.
