This day, 17 April, 1895, the Qing Dynasty government was humiliated in to signing the Treaty of Shimonoseki as a way to end the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895. Ceded to Japan as part of the Treaty were the Liaodong Peninsula (later returned due to the intervention of France, Germany and Russia) together with Taiwan (to remain under Japanese rule for 50 years) and the Penghu Islands.
