The working conference of the joint application for world heritage status for city walls of the Ming and Qing dynasties was held in Nanjing on July 9.

The eight cities teaming up to make their city walls on the list of World Heritage Sites are Nanjing of Jiangsu, Xi’an of Shaanxi, Linhai of Zhejiang, Jingzhou and Xiangyang of Hubei, Xingcheng of Liaoning, and Shouxian and Fengyang of Anhui, all of which have well-preserved city walls of the Ming and Qing dynasties. With Nanjing taking the lead, the eight cities have confirmed to jointly apply for world cultural heritage status for their ancient city walls.

The city walls in the eight cities are of prominent value in that they completely reflect China’s municipal system over a time span of more than 500 years in the two dynasties. The working conference marked a beginning of the joint application, but the eight cities still have a long way to go.
