METRO service between Kunshan city in neighboring Jiangsu Province and Shanghai’s downtown opened this morning as a new stretch of Metro Line 11 was put into service. It would be a 60-minute trip from the Huaqiao Town Station in Kunshan to Shanghai’s downtown Jiangsu Road Station, while it would take about 70 minutes to reach the station at the Xujiahui business hub. The fare would be 7 yuan (US$1.15) for a one-way trip.

It would mainly benefit the increasing number of people who live in Kunshan and need to travel daily to downtown Shanghai for work.

Cheering crowds of riders were seen gathering on the platform to welcome the trains. It is China’s first-ever provincial Metro Link.

Suzhou and Wuxi cities, also in Jiangsu Province, are also reported to have planned elevated Metro links that would connect to Shanghai’s Metro network to boost regional urban traffic efficiency.
