This day, 18 September, in 1931, a Japanese army detachment stationed in Manchuria detonated an ineffective explosion on the South Manchurian Railway as an excuse to occupy the city of Mukden. The Japanese then went on to occupy the entirety of Manchuria before being labelled an aggressor by the League of Nations, subsequently withdrawing its membership from the predecessor to the U.N.
