This day, 17 September, in 1894, the Battle of the Yalu River took place between ships of the Chinese Beiyang Fleet and the Imperial Japanese Navy, in what was to be the largest naval engagement of the First Sino-Japanese War. While the Chinese side was defeated, navies across the world have studied the Battle for its tactical lessons ever since. The New York Times would also liken the Battle to Waterloo.
