This day, 4 May, 1919, students from Peking University and more than a dozen schools gathered to demonstrate in front of Tiananmen Square. Their march angrily protested the transfer of Germany’s original rights and interests in Shandong to Japan at the Paris Peace Conference. As a direct result, China’s representatives at the Conference were prompted to refuse to sign the peace treaty.
