Smash bowls, dishes and beer bottles; have a big pillow fight! A “Stress-Release House” and “Venting Room” in Nanjing has made the headlines after attracting a large number of young people and students who, presumably, feel in need of its therapy.

Today’s fast-paced, highly-stressed work life makes young people particularly vulnerable, or so they claim. More and more people look to vent the pressures of their daily life in different ways. Hence, the Stress Release House (SRH) came into being. Popular with social media networks (needless to say), such outlets cater to those who find their stress in life or at work is high, or their inner self extremely angry.

According to a staff member of the SRH on Hongwu Lu in Xinjiekou, the combination of dynamic and static projects in the exhibition area can not only safely release stress and aid in venting anger, but can also create interesting photos that are ideal for social media.

Customers put on protective clothing and helmets and gloves, and go on to have a ball by breaking porcelain bowls, beer bottles, water bombs, computers, keyboards, etc. The anger outlet does not come cheap; an entry-level package is ¥88 per person, and this only includes the trampoline sandbags, live-action bumpers and bowl-breaking room.

While the beer-bottle-smashing experience at ¥138 may be indicative of ladies’ frustrations at their men folk’s addictions, the package also comes bundled with entry to the boxing and shooting room, venting house and diamond tunnel.

Typical of consumers’ comments on popular review website, Dianping, is “super fun and especially stress releasing”.

Zhang Lingxi, Director of the MW Emotional Venting House (MW 情绪发泄屋), said, “We hope to guide customers to use their anger, screaming, entertainment and other means to ease their psychological pressure, face up to their negative stresses such as stress and anxiety, and use the appropriate way to actively channel and vent the negative energy instead of passing it on to others, which is the original intention of our SRH. We hope that after all the stress-release activities like breaking beer bottles, our customers are able to live their life with a more positive and sunny attitude”.
