Techno Week, Chinese Week, Jazz Week and Pop Week are the respective themes of a 4-week long music festival presently underway in Nanjing’s Olympic Museum Square. And the best parts? It’s all free of charge, and the star of the show shall be the legendary Jazz Band from Shanghai’s Peace Hotel.

With nightly performances from 19:00 to 21:00, the Summer of Hexi Jianye Music festival shall also include additional weekend-only attractions, including exhibits of dance, song and musical instruments.

Sponsor of the festival, the Cultural Museum of Nanjing’s Jianye District, is touting the event as an integration of themed-music performances and cultural services that bring modern art to the general public and help create an open and vigorous music atmosphere.

The highlight of the festival, however, will be the Shanghai Peace Hotel Jazz Band (or at least part thereof), presenting their old-school Shanghai Jazz. Performing for more than 60 years in over 60 countries, the band has played for many heads of state and government, such as the Queen of England, together with former Presidents of the United States and France, as well as a Prime Minister of Australia.

Away from the old men of Jazz, and in addition to the performances in the main stage area, the festival also takes interaction, teaching and experience as its main objectives. Festival goers can try their hand different interactive experiences, such as the Waterfall Swing and on-site “how to be a DJ” lectures.

Thinking of itself as the “living room” of Nanjing, Jianye district has set about the construction of “international urban-life scenes”, so as to bring rich life experiences to the general public. This summer of music is undoubtedly a highlight in the district’s 2019 art and music season.

Nanjing’s Olympic Museum Square is located between the Nanjing Eye and the International Youth Culture Centre.
