Yesterday 10 November, a press conference held by the Municipal Greening and Gardening Bureau revealed that the selection process had taken a full 5 months.
昨天11月10日，市绿化园林局召开新闻发布会透露，评选过程历时整整5个月。
The time was spent initially by experts who selected a short list of the cities greenways which was then put online, with the public encouraged to vote as to their idea of the most beautiful, reports Nanjing Daily.
据《南京日报》报道，专家们最初花时间选出了一份城市绿道的最终名单，然后将其发布到网上，鼓励公众投票选出他们认为最美丽的城市绿道。
Mao Haicheng, Deputy Director of the Bureau, said that the city’s greenways promote the integration of existing parks and green spaces, and greatly serves the people, bringing convenience for citizens to enjoy a high-quality leisure life.
该局副局长毛海成表示，该市绿道促进了现有公园与绿地的融合，极大地服务于人民，为市民享受高品质的休闲生活带来了便利。
“The selection of the ‘most beautiful greenways’ aims to explore and select the Nanjing greenways with the most unique scenery and the most profound heritage, which are also dynamic and interesting, further advocating the concept of a green and low-carbon life, and enhancing the city’s influence”, said Mao.
“此次‘最美绿道’评选，旨在发掘和评选南京风景最独特、底蕴最深厚、有活力、有趣味的绿道，进一步倡导绿色低碳生活理念，提升城市影响力。”毛说。
So what are they and where are Nanjing’s greenways?
那么南京的绿道到底是什么，又在哪里呢？
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a greenway as, “a corridor of undeveloped land preserved for recreational use or environmental protection”.
《韦氏词典》将绿道定义为“为娱乐用途或环境保护而保留的未开发土地的走廊”。
In Nanjing, that “corridor” is most often a pathway open to pedestrians, joggers, cyclists, inliners and more. A few others are actual roads open to vehicular traffic. But that which they have in common is the excess of greenery all around, usually kept in pristine shape by city-employed gardeners.

It has also been reported that 129.8 kilometres of greenways will by year end been built or renovated in Nanjing this year, while there are also plans for community-level greenways in the future.
