Jiangsu is poised to build a US$1billion super DNA sequencing platform in Nanjing, with a main focus on storing millions of ethnic DNA from across the country. The project is a part of the National Health and Medicine Big Data programme. Officials stated that the first phase would store the medical information of roughly 80 million people at the facility.

Big data at the super facility will be used by scientists to study genetic mutations related to major diseases. Researches will be looking for an impact between environmental impacts and genes.

Studies of DNA will focus on the general health of the population that includes population genetics, cognitive development, cancer, rare diseases and more. The DNA study is expected to yield results within 4 years.

The facility will have the capacity to absorb anywhere between 400,000 to 500,000 DNA results per year, reported Xinhua.

The project is a joint effort between the Nanjing Yangzi State-Owned Investment Group, Southeast University and Nanjing Medical University.
