Hot on the heels of the World Youth Volleyball U19 World Championship, held in Nanjing last week, comes the Badminton World Championship, on the horizon for 30 July until 5 August.

The city of Nanjing has long touted itself as a sports enthusiast. While it remains true that the city is home to a heathy number of Olympians, albeit in single digits, until recently there was also but scant evidence of this proclaimed dedication to physical activity.

That all changed in 2010, with the announcement from the International Olympic Committee that Nanjing had been selected as host to the second Youth Olympics in 2014. The Asia Youth Games for 2013 was quickly then assigned to Nanjing, to act as a dress rehearsal for the following year’s event.

More recently, Nanjing was awarded the title of “Capital of Roller Sports” by the International Roller Skating Federation and was host to the annual Roller Games Skating Championships in 2017.

Just this past Sunday, 15th June, Russia became triumphant at the World Youth Volleyball U19 World Championship, by winning nothing short of a double slam, with Maria Bocharova and Maria Veronica taking home the women’s title and Denis Shekunov with Dmitrii Veretiuk the men’s, reports Inside the Games.

The Badminton World Championship is held 3 out of every 4 years, with the exception being the years of the Summer Olympics. Just as with table tennis, China has a near dominance of the sport on a global level, having taken 63 of the 115 medals (54.8 percent) won in the event’s history, dating back to 1977. China has previously hosted the Championship on two occasions; in Beijing in 1987 and Guangzhou in 2013.

This year, here in Nanjing, the event shall take place at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Sports Park Gymnasium in Jiangbei New Area, formerly Pukou District, between 30 July and 5 August. Tickets for the Badminton World Championship, priced ¥50-500, can be purchased via online ticketing portal, Damai, by following this link.
