On 31 August, 2018, JD.com chairman Liu Qiangdong has been arrested in Minnesota for alleged sexual misconduct and released 1 day later.

In a statement on Chinese social media site Weibo, JD.com claimed its chairman had been falsely accused, stating, “After [an] investigation by the local police, no misconduct was found and he will continue his journey as planned. We will take the necessary legal action against false reporting or rumours”. According to the New York Times, police have said the investigation is being treated as active.

JD.com is said to have encountered a rise in bad publicity of late, with this arrest coming in as its latest. “China’s most powerful technology companies are still tightly controlled by their founders, so the fortunes of businesses worth tens or even hundreds of billions of dollars are closely intertwined with the fates of a small number of executives”, writes Raymond Zhong and Li Yuan for the New York Times.

The Minneapolis Police Department have said Mr. Liu was released “pending formal complaint”. The station did not feel it necessary to hold Liu at the station while conducting the investigation.

This is not the first time Liu has been accused of sexual misconduct. Not long ago accused by a guest at a party in his penthouse in Australia of having sex with the accuser without her consent. While he was not charged in this case, an Australian judge denied his request for a suppression order.
