Jixi has a 19.9-kilometre crater named after it on the asteroid 253 Mathilde, one of 23 named for coalfields because the asteroid is dark and carbonaceous; by 1991 its mining bureau was China’s second-largest coal production base.

Jixi is named for its position west of Rooster Comb Mountain, and the mine came before the city: coal was found in 1906, the mining bureau was founded in 1948, and the city was established in 1957.

The bureau’s output passed 10 million tonnes in 1975 and reached 20 million in 1991, and its engineers were sent to help build coal bases at Liupanshui in Guizhou and the Yimin River in Inner Mongolia.

The International Astronomical Union approved the name Jixi in 2000, for a Chinese coal basin, according to its Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature. Mathilde’s other craters carry the names of coalfields such as Karoo in South Africa, Quetta in Pakistan and Teruel in Spain.

Jixi has since sent more than 1 billion tonnes of coal to the country and built China’s first self-designed vertical coal shaft and first combined coal cutter, according to the city government. Its coal operations reached 17.43 million tonnes of raw coal in 2023, according to the city’s economic census. The same source puts graphite reserves at 976 million tonnes, more than half of it large-flake, and Jixi calls itself China’s graphite capital.

According to Jixi’s statistical communiqués, GDP fell 1.1 percent in 2024, with the secondary sector down 16.1 percent, and rose 3.7 percent in 2025 to ¥64.85 billion, with the secondary sector down 5.1 percent and services up 7.2 percent. The primary sector was 32.7 percent of output, the secondary 18.7 percent and services 48.6 percent. Food processing, at 9.1 percent of above-scale industry, grew 12.1 percent, and graphite, at 4.5 percent, grew 2.7 percent, according to the city’s economic analysis.

The resident population was 1,862,165 at the 2010 census and 1,502,060 at the 2020 census, a fall of 19.3 percent, and the city puts it at 1.377 million in 2025.

The Last Battles and the Russian Border

The city government describes Hutou fortress in Hulin as the site of one of the final battles of the Second World War. It also identifies the Northeast Old Aviation School in Mishan with the origins of China’s air force, while Zhenbao Island was the scene of the 1969 Sino-Soviet border clash.

Xingkai Lake, a border lake shared with Russia, covers about 4,380 square kilometres, of which 1,240 are in China, according to the Mishan government.

The Mudanjiang–Jiamusi high-speed line, which opened on 6 December 2021, has a station at Jixi West; the fastest trains take 42 minutes to Mudanjiang, and Harbin is within three hours, according to the Qitaihe government and China Radio.

At the Mishan border crossing, the Bailenghe bridge, listed by Guinness as the smallest border-river bridge, lies about 2 kilometres from the Russian village of Turiy Rog, according to the Jixi government.
