Indium is a soft metal used in flat-screen displays, and Laibin calls itself the world’s largest indium production base; the city was set up only on 28 December 2002, though its first county dates to 214 BCE.

The Qin set up Zhongliu County at Wuxuan in 214 BCE, and the name Laibin came from a Tang county of 743 CE. The State Council abolished Liuzhou Prefecture on 29 September 2002 and created the city from its southern counties.

Indium and Aluminium

Laibin is the world’s largest indium production base, a leading tin-ingot base and a centre for aluminium and manganese, with Yinhai Aluminium making 500,000 tonnes of electrolytic aluminium a year, according to the city government. Guangxi holds about 62 percent of the world’s proven indium reserves, while its Huaxi smelter reportedly accounted for 28 percent of global indium production at one point in the 2000s, according to the region’s natural resources department.

Jinxiu Yao Autonomous County, administered by Laibin, is known as the “World Yao Capital”, reflecting the diversity of Yao communities in the Dayao Mountains, according to Famous Guangxi and Baidu Baike. The Huangni drum dance of Jinxiu, a form of the Yao long-drum dance, is on China’s national intangible cultural heritage list, according to the State Council.
