Pingdingshan; A Flat Mountain, a Working City, and a Few Things that Stayed

Half the work before you arrive is already done. Pingdingshan is one of those Henan cities that is a flat mountain. Simple enough. You hear it once, and then the picture starts on its own. Yet naturally, it is much more than that.

The city sits in mid-southern Henan, where the ground starts to shift a little and the province stops feeling completely level. Westward there are hills. Eastward the land opens. In between are coal, water, kilns, roads, factories, and a lot of ordinary life that does not ask to be noticed all the time.

Yao Mountain is the easiest place to begin, and it deserves the attention. It is green, broad, misty in the right weather, and large enough to make the rest of the city feel smaller without making it feel lesser. You go up expecting scenery, and the mountain does what mountains do when they are worth the trip; it slows you down a little and then keeps its own pace whether you like it or not.

Lushan county changes the register again. The Xianrendong site, or Immortal’s Cave, has pushed the story of early humans in this part of Henan further back than many people expected. The cave sits high on a cliff, a bit damp at first glance, and somehow more believable for that. It does not feel polished. It feels used, which is usually the better sign when you are talking about very old life.

Pingdingshan has other layers sitting closer to the surface. Ru porcelain is the obvious one. Ruzhou Ru ware, with that blue-gray glaze that looks like the sky after rain, is one of the great Song dynasty porcelains, and it gives the city a kind of quiet distinction that sits very comfortably beside the coal. A city can be smoky and elegant at once; Henan has never minded that sort of contradiction.

The coal story does not need to be disguised. Pingdingshan has long been one of Henan’s energy cities, and you can feel that in the city’s practical shape, in the roads that feel made for work, and in the plain certainty that some places exist because people needed things from underground and this was where they came to get them. Coal is not decorative here. It is part of the city’s muscle memory.

That old industrial weight sits beside a more fragile local pride. Ru kilns, Ru porcelain, old cave sites, mountain scenery, hot springs. It is a strange and workable mix. You can spend the morning in the hills and the afternoon with ceramics, and by evening be back in a street where people are eating something hot and unpretentious that probably tastes better than it looks on the page.

Jiaxian hulè noodles, Baofeng mutton soup, Wugang hot tofu, baked flatbread, pot dishes, the usual no-nonsense repertoire. These are not dishes that ask for a speech. They ask for a table and a spoon, and for you to stop making life more complicated than it needs to be for a while.

Getting there from Nanjing is straightforward. Direct high-speed trains from Nanjing South to Pingdingshan West usually take about 4 hours 3 minutes to 4 hours 10 minutes. The trip is short enough to feel manageable, but long enough to let the city’s geography arrive in your head before your body does.

A first visit does not need to be over-planned. Go to Yao Mountain. Spend time in Lushan if the cave site interests you. Then let the city itself happen a little, with its kilns, its smoke, its soup, and the odd comfort of a place that has learned to keep several different lives in the same address.

Pingdingshan is not trying to resolve its contradictions. It just lives with them. A flat mountain, a coal city, a porcelain city, a hot-soup city, a mountain city, a cave city. That sounds like a list, but in practice it feels more like a place that has refused to become one thing on command, and is better for it.
