While the world may know about all the electric cars which we drive, or China’s enormous wind farms, perhaps it has a little less of an idea about the ESG efforts which are taking place at the local level.

As such, it was the perfect opportunity to investigate an event which took place in Nanjing yesterday, 8 March, put on by people who are really making a difference, when it comes to ESG.

The International Women’s Day activity, supported by local government and held in Nanjing’s Mochou lake Park, saw even Communist Party of China members with the scenic spot dip into their own pockets to support the two charities present on the day.
此次由当地政府支持、在南京莫愁湖公园举办的“三八”活动，连景区内的共产党员也纷纷自掏腰包，支持当天到场的两家慈善机构。
One such charity, the Pfrang Association, established by foreigners in the wake of the deaths of some of their own and supported by the local community, has become one of China’s longest serving charitable organisations.
Pfrang协会就是这样的慈善机构之一，它是由外国人在一些外国人去世后成立并得到当地社区支持的，已成为中国服务时间最长的慈善组织之一。
Jenny McLellan with the Pfrang Association spoke with ESG China and The Nanjinger, saying, “Lots of people remember the Pfrang family, and they have empathy, and they are also amazed, that after this tragedy, something beautiful came out, which is the result of the Association, so we can help the students to have a better future”.
Pfrang 协会的 Jenny McLellan 接受 ESG 中国和《南京人》采访时表示，“很多人都记得 Pfrang 家族，他们有同理心，他们也很惊讶，在这场悲剧之后，出现了一些美好的东西，这就是协会的成果，所以我们可以帮助学生拥有更美好的未来”。
The Pfrang Organisation were joined at the event by the Rainbow Centre that provides loving care, treatment and specialist nursing for palliative children.

Then there were the tempting treats from the world over; Italy, Turkey, Germany… plus games and prizes which together all added up to a memorable day out for visitors, passers by and those spearheading that which amounted to a unique ESG effort in Nanjing, for International Women’s Day!

Events of this sort may still be in their infancy outside of the big cities of Shanghai and Beijing, but the takeaway from yesterday’s event must be that there is a tremendous, and genuine interest from members of the public in activities of this sort.

They are asking questions; they are asking how they can get involved, they are asking about how they can give back to their communities. And that’s the important thing to remember. It’s a fantastic message as to the ESG effort underway, out of Nanjing, China.
