Nanjing University of Science & Technology (NUST) recently held a contest to select three tree climbers who will attend the coconut tree climbing invitational tournament in November.

More than 10 students attended the preliminary contest on October 27, who were expected to climb up a 8-meter-high metasequoia tree.

Tree climbing is a demanding sport in terms of one’s physical quality and skills, and requires strong upper body strength, back muscle strength, as well as waist and abdomen strength, said Zhu Jihua, teacher with the Sports Department of NUST. To put it simply, one must be able to do 15 standard pull-ups in order to climb up to the tree top.

Four students made to the tree top successfully. The quickest climber took 20 seconds, and the slowest took 31 seconds.

The National Invitation Tournament for Coconut Tree Climbing is a competition organized by National Traditional Sports Association for Ethnic Minorities in Hainan. NUST will also consider carrying out relevant tree climbing activities in the future.
