Yangzhou will spend 2.015 billion yuan (US$330 million) on water conservancy project to build Yangzhou into an aquatic ecological civilized city this year, according to Yangzhou Water Conservancy Bureau on Mar 3.

The project shows that water conservancy construction of 50.36 million cubic meters will be completed along with 11,636 buildings above minor groove level and 371-kilometer seepage proof canal in 2014, in order to realize the transition from estuary regulation, flood control, water transferring and drought resisting to an all-win pattern of water safety and aquatic ecology protection.

Emphases of this year’s water conservancy work are not only put on the Huaihe River-Yangtze River waterway and the reinforcement of medium and large scale water locks that have direct effect on peoples’ living security, but also on the channel improvement, improvement of rural water environment and drinking safety related to urban landscape and environmental protection.

The project will promote new ecological protection technology, abandon the past practice of concrete revetment which caused vegetarian deterioration, and focus on water ecology restoration to make water conservancy projects play its role in ecological protection.
