This day, 4 December, 1989, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher sent a letter to General Secretary Jiang Zemin via a diplomatic adviser, reiterating the British position that it “has no intention of allowing Hong Kong to be used as a base for subversion”, nor does it try to “internationalise” the Hong Kong issue. This was an important contact between China and Britain after the political turmoil of 4 June.
