Jiaozuo is one of those Henan cities that does not arrange itself neatly for the visitor. You get off the train and there is just the ordinary city first, which is often a better sign than a glossy entrance. A station, a road, some traffic, a tea stall if you are lucky, and the sense that the place has already been busy for a long time before you showed up.
焦作是一座不会老老实实先把自己摆整齐给你看的河南城市。你下了火车，先看到的就是普通城市本身，这往往比光鲜的门面更说明问题。车站、马路、车流，要是运气好，还有个卖茶的小摊。你会觉得，这地方在你来之前就已经忙了很久。
People usually start with Yuntai Mountain, because of course they do. It is the easy answer, and in this case the easy answer is not wrong. But what stays with you is not just the mountain. It is the dampness, the smell of stone after rain, the way the roads keep disappearing into folds of green, and then reappearing with a bus full of people who have all made the same decision at the same time.
人们通常会先提云台山，这也很正常。这个答案很容易说出口，而且在这里，容易说出口的答案并不算错。可真正留在你脑子里的，不只是山本身。还有那种湿气，雨后石头的味道，路在青绿里一会儿消失、一会儿又露出来，以及一车人突然同时做了同一个决定的那种热闹。
There is a lot of talk about Tai Chi too, and that is fair enough. Chenjiagou is not just a name on a signboard; it is a place where people still care about posture, breath, repetition, and not looking ridiculous while doing something difficult slowly. That is a very human achievement, really.
太极也是这里很重要的话题，这一点也没什么可奇怪的。陈家沟不是一块写着名字的牌子而已；那是一个人们真的还在意站姿、呼吸、重复，以及把一件难事慢慢做好时不要显得太滑稽的地方。这其实很有人味。
On the Way, the City Keeps Interfering
路上，城市自己也会插话
Jiaozuo has industry in it, and not in a decorative way. Coal, aluminium, manufacturing, all the usual machinery of a northwestern Henan city that has been asked for decades to be useful in the straightforward sense of the word. You do not need to admire this to understand it. You only need to notice that it is there, shaping the streets and the rhythm of ordinary life.
焦作也有工业，而且不是那种拿来装饰门面的工业。煤、铝、制造业，这些都是豫西北城市几十年来被要求“有用”所留下的东西。你不必对它们表示赞美，只要知道它们一直在场，街道和日常节奏都被它们塑过形。
This is one reason the city feels slightly unshowy in a way that is hard to fake. There is a busier, more practical mood to it. People are on their way somewhere. They know where the tea shops are. They know where the mountain road bends. They probably know, better than any visitor, when the rain is about to start.
这也是为什么这座城有一种不太会装的气质，挺难伪造。它更忙一点，也更实用一点。人们都在路上，知道茶馆在哪，知道山路在哪个弯，也多半比游客更清楚雨什么时候要下。
And then there is the food, which gets remembered in a much less official way. Steam, broth, noodles, cheap tables, someone calling out a dish name that sounds better than it looks on paper. Nothing fancy. That is usually a compliment.
然后就是吃的，这部分被记住的方式就没那么“官方”了。热气、汤、面、便宜的小桌子，还有人喊出一个菜名，听起来比写在纸上更有味道。没什么讲究。这通常是夸奖。
Getting there from Nanjing is simple enough. Direct high-speed trains from Nanjing South to Jiaozuo take roughly five hours, give or take. Long enough to read, drift, look out the window and forget what time it is for a bit; short enough that the city still feels like part of the same conversational map.
从南京去焦作也不复杂。南京南到焦作的直达高铁大约五个小时上下。时间足够你读会儿书、发会儿呆、看看窗外、短暂忘掉时间；又短到让这座城仍然像是同一张聊天地图里的地方。
You do not need to overbuild a visit here. Go to Yuntai if that is the reason you came. Go to Chenjiagou if you want to see how a tradition survives by being repeated rather than displayed. Then spend some time in the city itself, because the city is not just an approach road to its famous places. It has its own weather, its own bad asphalt, its own little tea breaks.
来这里不必把行程堆得太满。想看山就去云台山。想看传统怎样靠一遍一遍练下去而不是靠展示存活，就去陈家沟。然后留一点时间给焦作本身，因为它不是通往名胜的引道。它有自己的天气、自己的破路面、自己的茶歇。
Jiaozuo is maybe best understood as a place that does not pause for explanation. It just keeps happening. You can watch people moving through it in the morning, or standing still in a park, or waiting for a bus with the mild patience of someone who has already made peace with the day. That is enough, usually.
焦作也许最适合被理解成一座“不等人解释”的城市。它就是一直在发生。你可以看见早晨的人群穿过它，或者看见公园里有人站着不动，或者看见等公交的人，带着一种已经和今天和解了的耐心。通常，这就够了。
It is not trying to be impressive every minute. That helps. A city gets tiring when it is always performing its own importance. Jiaozuo is happier when it is busy, damp, a little scuffed, and not especially concerned that you noticed all of it.
它并不打算每一分钟都要让人惊叹。这反而是好事。一座城市如果总在表演自己的重要性，会让人疲惫。焦作更自在的时候，是它忙着、潮着、有点旧、有点磨损，而且并不特别在意你是否都看见了这些。
