This day, 29 May, in 1997, China announced at the United Nations Headquarters in New York that it shall participate in the United Nations peacekeeping standby arrangement in principle, to provide military observers, civilian police and engineering plus logistical support units to United Nations peacekeeping operations at an appropriate time. 29 May of each year is also the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
