This day, 11 August, in 1872, the first 30 government-sent overseas students in Chinese history set off for the United States. They would be followed by four batches of 120 government-funded students, who would upon their return all play an important role in China’s creation of new businesses such as mines and railways, and make key contributions in political and diplomatic arenas.
