Seen from the Hun River, Fushun is a city of apartment blocks, older works, bridges and hills. Its modern shape was built on coal; its national place has also been formed by revolutionary memory and the older history of Qing beginnings.

Many visitors treat Fushun as an easy side trip from the provincial capital. It is that, but the short journey can be misleading. Few Chinese cities place heavy industry, revolutionary memory and early Qing history so close together.

The Mine Under the City

According to Britannica, Fushun’s modern growth came from nearby bituminous coal, developed on an industrial scale in the early twentieth century and later tied to railways, steel, chemicals and shale oil. The city’s reputation as a coal centre followed from that base.
据《大英百科全书》记载，抚顺的现代发展来自附近的烟煤资源，二十世纪初进入工业化开采阶段，后来又与铁路、钢铁、化工和页岩油相连。抚顺作为煤都的名声，正是由此而来。
The West Open-Pit Mine gives that history its scale. The U.S. Geological Survey has measured the operation at 6.6 kilometres long, 2.0 kilometres wide and 300 metres deep; China Daily has since described a restored pit 6.6 kilometres long, 2.2 kilometres wide and 420 metres deep.

The same China Daily report said the mine began operation in 1901, had produced more than 280 million metric tonnes of coal before closing in June 2019 and once accounted for one-eleventh of China’s annual coal output. These figures do more work than adjectives.

Lei Feng brings a different kind of scale. He was a young PLA soldier who died in Fushun in 1962. In March 1963, Mao Zedong’s call to “learn from Comrade Lei Feng” appeared in the press and turned him into a national example of obedience, thrift and service.
雷锋带来的是另一种尺度。他是一名年轻的解放军战士，1962年在抚顺去世。1963年3月，毛泽东“向雷锋同志学习”的题词见报，使他成为服从、节俭和服务他人的全国性榜样。
The paradox is that halls, campaigns and school lessons have been built around a life whose public record is itself disputed. Academic work on The Diary of Lei Feng notes that his good deeds were photographed or restaged, that the diary was published after his death in edited form and that even his historicity has sometimes been questioned. That does not make the memorial irrelevant; it does make simple reverence look inadequate. Fushun’s Lei Feng Memorial Hall is therefore best read as both commemoration and evidence of how power can turn an uncertain life into a civic instruction.

Qing Beginnings in Xinbin
新宾的清朝开端
Xinbin, now under Fushun, shifts the story again. Hetu Ala, associated with Nurhaci, and the Qing Yongling Tombs put early Qing memory within reach of ordinary roads, petrol stations and county lunches.
如今隶属抚顺的新宾，又把叙事转向另一处。与努尔哈赤有关的赫图阿拉城，以及清永陵，把清初记忆放在普通道路、加油站和县城午餐之间。
For the visitor, this means Fushun is best handled in parts. The mine and coal museum explain the industrial city. The Lei Feng Memorial Hall explains a political afterlife. Xinbin requires more time, but adds a Manchu and Qing dimension that many quick Liaoning itineraries miss.
对游客来说，抚顺最好分开来看。矿坑和煤矿博物馆解释工业城市。雷锋纪念馆解释一种政治身后影响。新宾需要更多时间，却补上了许多辽宁短线行程容易错过的满族和清朝维度。
Transport is straightforward. Current rail timetables show frequent direct trains between Shenyang and Fushun, with the fastest high-speed services taking about 18 or 19 minutes and conventional services usually taking under an hour. By road, the trip is usually around 40 kilometres, depending on the starting point.
交通很直接。目前铁路时刻表显示，沈阳与抚顺之间有多趟直达列车，最快高铁约18至19分钟，一般普速列车通常也在一小时以内。走公路通常约40公里，具体取决于出发地点。
That closeness is part of Fushun’s surprise. Seen again from the Hun River, the city is still a near neighbour of Shenyang; after the mine, Lei Feng and Xinbin, it no longer feels like a simple add-on to the provincial capital.
这种近，正是抚顺令人意外之处。再从浑河边看，它仍是沈阳的近邻；但看过矿坑、雷锋和新宾之后，它就不再像省会旁边一个简单的附加项。
