Fuxin is not a city that tries to flatter you. Coal built it, coal thinned it out, and the cost of that long dependence is still visible in the streets. In official language, it was China’s first national resource-exhausted city economic transformation pilot.
阜新不是那种一上来就想讨好人的城。煤把它养大，也把它掏空了一部分，街面上还能看出那笔账。按官方说法，它还是全国第一个资源枯竭型城市经济转型试点市。
The Haizhou open-pit mine is the obvious place to start. It is enormous, about 4 kilometres long, 2 kilometres wide and 350 metres deep, and it still gives the city its scale even after the digging stopped.
海州露天矿是最该先看的地方。坑很大，长约4公里、宽约2公里、垂深350米。采矿停了，但城市的尺度还是被它定着。
What followed was not a clean pivot. Official pages still talk plainly about a small economic base and an industrial structure that needs work. New energy, agate processing, modern farming, tourism and manufacturing matter now, but they are still doing the work of replacement.
后面的转身并不漂亮。官方材料讲得也直白，经济底子偏小，产业结构还得慢慢调。新能源、玛瑙加工、现代农业、旅游、制造业，这些年都在往前顶，补的就是煤退下去以后留下的空。
Old Ground, New Uses
老底子和新生意
Chahai in Fumeng County pulls you much further back. This 8,000-year-old site, with its early jade and dragon-shaped relics, is a reminder that Fuxin is older and stranger than its mining story.
再往阜蒙县去，时间一下子倒回去了。查海遗址有八千年历史，玉器和龙形石塑都在那儿，说明阜新不只是有矿，也不是从矿才开始。
Tenjiazi is where the city gets more practical. Agate is not just a souvenir here; it is a whole chain of cutting, polishing, selling and making. More than 3,000 businesses are involved, and you can feel that scale in the street.
十家子就更具体了。这里不是单卖玛瑙，是一整条链，切料、打磨、卖成品都连着。官方说相关企业有三千多家，站在街上就能感觉到这个规模。
Back in the urban core, Yulong Lake is useful precisely because it is ordinary. People walk there, ride there, sit by the water and let the city breathe for a while.
回到城里，玉龙湖的好处恰恰是普通。散步、骑车、坐着发呆，让城里这口气慢一点。
Fuxin also likes to call itself a basketball city, and that label fits better than most slogans. It sounds less like promotion than habit: courts, schools, neighbourhood games, people who keep moving.
阜新也爱把自己叫作篮球城，这个名字其实比很多口号都顺。球场、学校、社区比赛，人一直在动。
Outskirts, Food, and the Way In
城外、吃饭和进城的路
If you want open air rather than urban water, Haitang Mountain gives the city some slope and roughness. It is the kind of place people go when they want to get out of the middle of town without turning the whole afternoon into a plan.
想看开阔一点的地方，就去海棠山。那里有坡度，也有一点野气。去的人多半是想从城里出来透口气，不想把半天安排得太满。
Baodi Spa and Huangjiagou are the softer edge of the map. One is for sitting in hot water; the other is for a longer day out. Fuxin needs both kinds of escape.
宝地斯帕和黄家沟是地图上更软的那一边。一个适合泡着，一个适合出去待一天。阜新两种松弛都需要。
The food is direct. Mongolian stuffed pies, Fuxin pancakes, mutton soup, donkey-meat steamed dumplings and Zhangwu black tofu are the dishes to look for, and none of them is pretending to be delicate.
吃的很直接。蒙古勒津馅饼、阜新煎饼、羊汤、驴肉蒸饺、彰武黑豆腐，都不讲虚的，吃起来就是实在。
Getting around is fairly straightforward. Fuxin Station and Fuxin South serve different parts of the rail network, and the city sits northwest of Shenyang, with roads and trains doing most of the practical work.
进出阜新也不难。阜新站、阜新南站分担不同方向的铁路，城市又在沈阳西北面，公路和铁路都算顺手。
The thing to remember is that Fuxin is not trying to hide its problems. It is still carrying the afterlife of coal, but it has also learned how to keep building around that fact.
记住这一点就够了：阜新没有把自己的问题藏起来。它还在背着煤时代的后账，但也一直在往前补，往前长。
That makes it more interesting than a tidy recovery story. You are looking at a city with damage, pressure and some visible effort, all in the same frame.
这样的阜新，比那种整整齐齐的成功故事更耐看。你看到的是一座有伤、有压力、也一直在用力往前走的城。
